WHAT We Sing Matters
It wasn’t that long ago that singing hymns was central to the church service in practically every Christian faith. But within the last 20 years, singing hymns powerfully in many of our churches has nearly vanished. And there is no doubt that our churches and our personal faith has suffered because of this all but lost tradition. This is not to say that only hymns are good to sing to worship but most of the time, these are the songs that lend to most congregational participation and explain the deep truths of our faith. There are also many modern hymns and songs that provide the theological foundation for worshipping rightly. However, it is our job as Christians to be vigilant about what we sing and to make it a priority to seek songs that truly praise God in all His glory. There are many reasons why singing the great hymns of our faith should not be overlooked but should be a priority within our homes, families and congregations. Below are 7 reasons why singing hymns should be an important part of our Christian life.
1. Hymns were written with congregational singing in mind.
2. Hymns show us that we don’t sing to attract the lost but to glorify God.
3. Hymns bring together all generations of people.
4. Hymns are the work of the congregation, not mere entertainment.
5. Hymns show social awareness.
6. Hymns give room for a more genuine emotional response.
7. Hymns teach good theology.
Hymns and songs should never take the place of scripture. Reading and studying the Word of God should always be of uttermost importance. But hymns and songs can be a wonderful extension to our worship in the Word. Here are 25 hymns that every Christian should know and sing.
Amazing Grace
It is Well with My Soul
How Great Thou Art
There is a Fountain
Jesus Paid It All
To God Be the Glory
Standing on the Promises
When We All Get to Heaven
The Love of God
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Rock of Ages Cleft for Me
Nothing but the Blood
Holy, Holy, Holy
Great is Thy Faithfulness
All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
Blessed Assurance
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
Crown Him with Many Crowns
At the Cross
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
This is My Father’s World
